Louis Vuitton guarantees the authenticity only of what it sells in its own stores, on louisvuitton.com and on 24s.com, according to its own FAQ, and no single sign proves a pre-owned piece is genuine. What you can do with a listing is rule out the fakes that fail on canvas, thread, vachetta and date code, and leave the rest to an examination of the piece by a named third party.
What Louis Vuitton says
Louis Vuitton’s FAQ opens by acknowledging that it is one of the most counterfeited brands in the world. It does not mention date codes, does not mention chips, and does not describe any public tool for looking up a number. Any site offering to “verify your Louis Vuitton code online” is offering something the house does not describe anywhere we were able to read.
Speedy
Fashionphile describes it precisely. The monogram canvas on an authentic Speedy feels durable and looks slightly grainy, not plasticky. The stitching thread is a distinctive mustard yellow, made of beeswax-coated linen. The vachetta on the handles and trim leaves the factory pale and develops a honey-coloured patina with use.
On a used Speedy that patina works for you. Vachetta still pale on a bag the seller says is ten years old, or a uniform orange patina that looks painted on, are the two versions fakes produce.

Neverfull
Here there are model-specific tells, almost all from reseller guides of medium confidence. Collector’s Cage describes the monogram as symmetrical, mirrored on both sides, and Libas Collective adds that the initials and flowers continue across the side seams. On Damier Ébène, Fashionphile says only that counterfeiters fail on the precise alignment of the pattern.
The date code sits on a leather tab in the interior pocket area. The RealReal places it under the right-hand corner of the pocket, on any size and material, and other guides word it differently. The detachable pouch, which arrived in 2013 according to Rebag and 2014 according to LV Bagaholic, carries its own date code or chip, and Bagaholic and Collector’s Cage agree that it does not have to match the bag’s, only its era.

Keepall
Fashionphile explains that the sizes 45, 50, 55 and 60 are the length in centimetres. Collector’s Cage describes the monogram centred and mirrored across the seams, with no letters or flowers chopped in the visible areas, and the rolled vachetta handles firm, with tight, symmetrical stitching. LegitGrails, comparing a real Keepall 55 with a copy, describes the thick handle thread and the small folded leather piece, against a much larger one on the fake.
On the padlock, Fashionphile says it is one of the few pieces of the house’s hardware made of solid brass, and Collector’s Cage and Preloved Elite agree that it is engraved “Louis Vuitton”, stamped with its own number and paired with keys cut to that number. That number identifies the lock and its keys, not the bag. A complete set is a completeness check, not proof. The date code sits on a leather tab, on the handle or inside near the top edge according to Xupes, or on the interior pocket tab according to Madison Avenue Couture. Sources differ.
The Keepalls in the catalogue are at /bolsas/louis-vuitton/keepall/.
Alma
Here LegitGrails gives two concrete signs. The authentic canvas has a grainier texture, and the squares of the pattern are larger and more spaced out than on the fake, which prints a tighter grid. And the interior lining of an authentic Alma is a rosy red, while the fake’s leans pink.
Ask for one photo of the interior in daylight and one close-up of the canvas.

The date code and the chip
According to Xupes’ guide, Louis Vuitton began using date codes in the early 1980s, added factory letters late in that decade, and from 1990 to 2006 standardised the format to two letters followed by four digits. In 2007 it switched the numeric part from month and year to week and year.
A bag the seller dates to 1995 with a 2007-format code does not add up. And according to Xupes, with Lollipuff and LV Bagaholic saying the same, from March 2021 Louis Vuitton stopped printing date codes and moved to embedded chips. The house does not confirm this in its FAQ, so the exact date comes from third parties.
On the chip, Collector’s Cage says there is no public Louis Vuitton app that authenticates a bag by reading it, and that its mere presence proves nothing because counterfeiters already replicate them. So a piece from after March 2021 with no printed code is normal, and one sold as new with a printed code is, in Collector’s Cage’s words, a red flag.
A correct code proves nothing on its own. Xupes, Fashionphile and LV Bagaholic agree that counterfeiters copy the formats.
The paperwork
Vestiaire Collective warns in its buyer help that Louis Vuitton typically does not issue authenticity cards, and that finding one with a piece from the house is a strong indicator of a counterfeit. The box and dust bag do not appear in Fashionphile’s list of what it examines, which is craftsmanship, stamping, stitching, engravings, hardware, date codes, materials and serial numbers.
What no photo will tell you
Entrupy says there are fakes so true to the original that even the most experienced authenticator can be fooled, and its list of covered Louis Vuitton materials says nothing about the Keepall, the Neverfull or the chip.
The signs above filter the low and middle tiers. The top tier is only filtered by a physical examination by someone who answers for it with their name.
Buyer traps, replica vocabulary and documents in general are covered in how to buy pre-owned luxury without getting scammed, replica AAA, mirror quality and clone and which documents prove a luxury bag is genuine.
What this means for the Louis Vuitton pieces at Kove
Kove does not issue its own verdicts and has no laboratory. Some pieces carry a report from an outside laboratory, in the laboratory’s name, and the piece’s page says so when one exists. If you want one on a specific piece, it is arranged with that laboratory and you receive the result exactly as issued. The details are on Authenticity. The Louis Vuitton pieces in the catalogue are at /bolsas/louis-vuitton/.
Checklist for a real listing
- Canvas. Ask for a close-up. Smooth, plasticky surface, rule it out.
- Thread. Mustard yellow, not lemon yellow or beige. Any other colour, rule it out.
- Vachetta. Patina consistent with the age the seller gives. Pale at ten years or uniformly orange, rule it out.
- Neverfull. Pattern that does not continue across the side seam, rule it out. Pouch code different from the bag’s, normal.
- Keepall. Large folded handle piece, rule it out. Padlock with no number, ask.
- Alma. Rosy red lining, not pink. Large, spaced canvas squares, not a tight grid.
- Date code. Format consistent with the year. No code on a piece from after March 2021, normal. A printed code on one sold as new, ask why.
- It comes with an “authenticity card”. Count it against the bag. It comes with a chip. It proves nothing.
- Everything above passes. You still do not know. Ask for a report from a named third party before paying.
