Prada Re-Edition (Re-Nylon): the authentication guide

Card, white tag, NFC chip, triangle plaque, clochette, zippers. What proves something and what proves nothing on a pre-owned Prada Re-Edition 2005 or 2000.

Yes, a new Prada leaves the boutique with an authenticity card, and since 2021 many pieces also carry an NFC tag linked to a digital certificate. Neither one proves on its own that the pre-owned Re-Edition you are being offered is genuine, because the card is filled in by a person with a pen and the tag can only be checked by someone able to read it.

This guide is about how to verify. Prices for a pre-owned Re-Edition in Mexico are in another guide and are not repeated here.

The card

According to LegitGrails, Prada’s authenticity card is filled in by hand by the boutique sales associate at the time of purchase. Serial number, model, article code, colour, materials group, date and place of purchase. It is useful for cross-checking. The colour on the card has to be the colour of the bag, and so does the model. What it does not do is prove anything, because anyone with a pen can fill one in.

The white tag inside

The Re-Edition has a white tag inside with a code on it. According to LegitGrails, it is letters and digits, usually between five and fourteen characters, and Prada does not encode the production date in it. A seller or a “checker” who reads the bag’s year off that code is making it up.

The chip and the digital certificate

Prada Group is a founding member of the Aura Blockchain Consortium, formed on 20 April 2021 with LVMH and Cartier, according to the group’s own press release. According to NFCW, Prada integrates NFC tags into leather goods, footwear and garments, usually hidden in interior labels or soles, and tapping a phone against the tag lets you request a digital certificate of ownership.

Two things remain unclear in what we were able to read. Whether a specific Re-Edition from 2021 or later carries the tag, and exactly what a second owner sees when scanning it. A Re-Edition made before 2021 does not have one, and is not a fake for that reason. If it is offered to you as recent and the seller cannot find the tag, ask. If the seller does find it, whatever appears on screen is better interpreted by a laboratory than by you.

What you can see in a photo

The triangle plaque

“PRADA / MILANO / DAL 1913” with the crest. According to LegitGrails, modern superfakes replicate it closely, and that guide is explicit that you should never authenticate on the plaque alone. What you can check is what the interior plaque is made of. According to LegitGrails’ guide to the Re-Edition 2000, the interior logo plaque is ceramic on leather bags and leather on canvas or nylon bags. A plastic or fabric plaque is a strong sign of a counterfeit. On a Re-Nylon, that interior plaque should be leather.

The clochette on the Re-Edition 2005

The Re-Edition 2005 carries a hanging tag with the text “Prada Re-Edition 2005”. According to LegitGrails, on the genuine piece the text is centred, correctly weighted, with rounded corners. On fakes the “Prada” sits off-centre, the “2005” is thinner, and some replica makers skip the text altogether.

The shape of the nylon on the Re-Edition 2000

According to the same authentication house, genuine Tessuto nylon is sturdy enough to hold a rounded shape and ripples along the curve of the zipper. A Re-Edition 2000 that looks smooth and flat from one side to the other is a sign of a copy. Ask for a side-on photo with the bag closed.

The zippers

Fashionphile points out that Prada mainly uses zippers from named makers. ipi, Lampo, YKK and Riri. Fakes commonly come with unbranded pulls or misspelled names. Ask for a photo of the back of the pull.

What the best fakes already get right

Entrupy, which authenticates by comparing high-resolution images against a database with millions of records, says the latest superfakes come from the same factories with the same materials as the real thing, and that they fool even experts. Everything above filters out the low and mid range. The top range does not get filtered with photos, and the triangle plaque is exactly the point where LegitGrails says the best copies already succeed.

What this means for Prada pieces at Kove

Kove does not issue its own verdicts and has no laboratory. Some pieces carry a report from an outside laboratory, in the laboratory’s name, and the piece’s page says so when one exists. The report is not sent by message before delivery. If you want one on a specific piece, it is arranged with that laboratory and you receive the result exactly as issued, which can confirm the piece or fail to confirm it. The details are on Authenticity.

Re-Edition bags in the catalogue are at /en/bags/prada/re-edition/, with their own pages for the Re-Edition 2005 and the Re-Edition 2000. The rest of Prada is at /en/bags/prada/.

Checklist for a real listing

  1. Card. Cross-check model and colour against the bag. If they do not match, rule it out. If they match, it still proves nothing.
  2. White tag. Someone “reads the year” off it. There is no year in it.
  3. Interior plaque. Plastic or fabric, rule it out. On a Re-Nylon it should be leather.
  4. Re-Edition 2005. Clochette. Off-centre text, thin “2005”, or no text, rule it out.
  5. Re-Edition 2000. Side-on photo. Smooth, flat body, rule it out.
  6. Zipper. Back of the pull unbranded or misspelled, rule it out.
  7. Chip. Bag sold as recent with no NFC tag, ask. With a tag, a laboratory checks it.
  8. Everything above passes. Ask for a report from a named third party before you pay.
