No single sign proves a Chanel is authentic, and the best fakes already get the leather, the hardware and the stitching right. The only strong evidence is an examination of the physical piece by a named third party, and on bags made since 2021, the embedded chip that third party can check against its records.
What you can do with a listing is rule out the fakes that fail on what is visible. Below are the signs authentication guides describe for the Classic Flap, the Boy and the 19, followed by what no photo will ever tell you.
What the best fakes already get right
Entrupy, which authenticates by comparing high-resolution images against a database of millions of records, says the latest superfakes come from the same factories with the same materials as the real thing, and that its technology catches inconsistencies even experts miss.
Coco Approved documents one concrete case. A fake Chanel Vanity whose leather, hardware and stitching all passed inspection. It was caught only at the chip. Everything that follows filters the low and middle tiers. The top tier does not get filtered by photos.
Classic Flap
According to Rome Station’s guide, the quilting on an authentic Classic Flap shows more than nine stitches per inch inside each diamond, and often ten or eleven. Fakes tend to fall short, and the stitches look longer and more spread out.
The CC turnlock has a fixed orientation. The right C overlaps the left at the top, and the left C overlaps the right at the bottom. A straight-on photo of the lock tells you in a second. If the order is reversed, that is reason enough to close the chat.

Boy
According to LegitGrails’ guide, the hardware on an authentic Boy is a clear gold with a slightly grainy texture, not a smooth, shiny gold. The screws on the CC plaque are much smaller than the ones fakes show, and the plaque itself is thinner.
Ask for one photo of the CC plaque head-on and one from the side. Large screws and a thick plaque are the two signs that guide keeps coming back to.

Chanel 19
According to LegitGrails, the turnlock on an authentic 19 is rounder and more symmetrical than on fakes, in good-quality gold metal. The screws are tiny. On replicas they tend to be oversized.

The hardware on all three
Fashionphile points out that fakes often use cheap metals to mimic high-end hardware, and those metals tarnish, chip or streak with use. On a used bag that works in your favour. Ask for photos of the chain at the rub points and of the corners of the clasp. Gold plating that already shows grey metal underneath is a sign a new bag would never give you.
The serial number, the sticker and the chip
Chanel assigned a serial number to every bag, on an interior sticker and a matching card. Fashionphile says it does not base its determination on the sticker alone, and that it occasionally receives bags with no sticker that turn out to be authentic. Stickers peel, get lost and get copied. Any “serial checker” promising to confirm a Chanel from the number alone is selling you reassurance.
According to Madison Avenue Couture, from April 2021 and the 21A collection onward, Chanel replaced stickers and cards with an embedded chip. Chanel does not publish that date on any page we were able to read, so treat it as approximate. None of the guides we consulted describes how a buyer would read that chip alone. In practice, the laboratory is who checks it.
The papers that prove nothing
The card, the box and the dust bag. According to LV Bagaholic’s guide to Chanel repairs, Chanel asks for proof of purchase and accepts a card or a dust bag in its place. If the house treats all three as substitutes for one another, none of them is conclusive.
Nor is the receipt. There are commercial services selling Chanel receipt templates with the same header, store details and barcode as the original.
What does carry weight is a Chanel repair ticket in the name of that bag, because according to the same guide Chanel accepts only authentic pieces for repair. What this means for the Chanel pieces at Kove
Kove does not issue its own verdicts and has no laboratory. Some pieces carry a report from an outside laboratory, in the laboratory’s name, and the piece’s page says so when one exists. If you want one on a specific piece, it is arranged with that laboratory and you receive the result exactly as issued, which can confirm the piece or fail to confirm it. Checklist for a real listing
- Classic Flap. Count the stitches in one diamond of the photo. Fewer than nine per inch, rule it out.
- Classic Flap. CC turnlock. Right C on top at the top, left C on top at the bottom. Reversed, rule it out.
- Boy. CC plaque from the side. Thick plaque or large screws, rule it out.
- Chanel 19. Turnlock. Asymmetric or with large screws, rule it out.
- All three. Hardware at the rub points. Grey metal showing under the gold, rule it out.
- The seller offers a card, box, dust bag or receipt as proof. They are not.
- Everything above passes. You still do not know. Ask for a report from a named third party before paying.
